A New Beginning...
The life and death of the world lies in the Ragnarok Crystal.
This Crystal contains the ultimate power: the godlike ability to shape the lands. The whereabouts of this Crystal are unknown, but several shards are rumored to reside in the Treaty Castle.
The Crystal has a history almost as long as the world itself.  When the Gods brought the world into being, they planted the relic deep within the base of Eleminas, Star Tower in the Elven tongue. Naturally, the Dwarf excavators were the first to come into contact with this Crystal, but had no appreciation for it, as it appeared dirty and of little value. Because of these factors, the Dwarves sold it to a band of Elves for a mere one thousand gold pieces.
Upon taking possession of the Crystal, the Elves began to notice its strange properties and took it to the Royal Court for examination.  When its true nature was realized, the Court Magi took the relic to the Elven King, recommending that it be locked away for all eternity.  Though the Crystal was hidden away, never to be used, rumors of its existence and location began to escape.      Soon, these rumors reached the ears of a power hungry human prince, the Baron Uglaa.  On Uglaa's orders, an archmagus called Bzallin took up the search for the Ragnarok Crystal.  Quickly, though, Bzallin learned the true nature of the relic his master sought and began to plot to take it for himself.
How the Crystal was found remains a mystery, but the Crystal came into the hands of the Baron.  As the Baron learned to use the relic, his creations began to take on a sinister nature.  As Uglaa's power grew, Bzallin realized that his opportunity would soon be passed and so he attempted a coup.  Without the relic, though, the sorcerer's magic was no match for the Baron.  His revolution failed was quietly put down and Bzallin was executed along with all of his followers.
Uglaa used the power of the Crystal without regard for the toll it was taking on his people and soon he was master of the greatest empire Chaldane had ever seen.  It was at this time that Uglaa made his one fatal mistake, allying himself with the darkest powers of the Daemorn.
The Daemorn is one of the spheres of existence beyond Chaldane's own.  Each of these spheres has its own pantheon of Gods charged with its care.  Normally, the Gods are permitted to travel between the spheres, but they lose much of their power when they enter another.  With the power of the Crystal, though,
the Daemorn would not lose their godhood upon entering Chaldane.
With the Daemorn in violation of the ancient laws, the gods of Chaldane acted.  Taking on corporeal form, they stormed the gates of Uglaa's fortress.  Not even the power of the Crystal was a match for the fury of the Gods.  The Baron, his fortress, and his legion of followers were destroyed by the divine assault.  This did not satisfy the Gods, however.  With their combined power, Chaldane's gods shattered the Crystal, scattering its pieces across the world, never again to be used by mortal hands.
To this day, adventurers seek these shards, some hoping to bring peace to Chaldane, others striving to build their own empires, and still others searching for the Crystal shards in the name of their Gods.....
